10 to 15 minutes from Calabasas

Fitness classes
near Calabasas.

Society 3 is a coached group fitness studio at 21144 Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills, west of us, a few exits down the 101. Sixty minute classes, 24 people, cardio, strength, and functional work in every hour. Here is the drive, the parking, and what you get when you arrive.

01

From Calabasas to the studio

The fast way is the 101 east. Get on at Las Virgenes, Parkway Calabasas, or Mulholland, pass the Topanga Canyon Blvd exit, and take the next one, De Soto Ave. Head south to Ventura Blvd and turn right; the studio is on the left within a couple of blocks, at 21144, between De Soto and Canoga. The surface street way is just as simple. Take Calabasas Road east past The Commons, it becomes Ventura Blvd at Valley Circle, and you stay on Ventura through the Topanga Canyon and Canoga lights until 21144 comes up on the right. That route is slower, but it never stacks up the way the 101 does at 5 PM.

Turn in behind the building for the free lot. It has no time limit for members, so there is nothing to feed and nothing to run back to mid-class. The spots out front on Ventura Blvd are metered, and the side streets off Ventura are free but have posted limits, so skip both and use the lot.

Arrive 15 minutes before class for check-in, warm up, and your machine setup, and sign the waiver online before you come in. Directions and a map are on the studio’s Google listing.

02

What the class is

Every class is the TriMethod: three zones, five minutes in each, three rounds, sixty minutes exactly. Cardio on your own machine at your own pace, strength at your own station, then functional work, with 90 second transitions and a two minute break between rounds. A coach runs the room from the first minute to the last, and the cap is 24 people so the coach can actually see you.

It is a group fitness class built as interval training, with longer blocks than a typical HIIT class and a strength block built in, which is why we wrote a whole page on how it compares to HIIT and circuits. Beginners are welcome and scaled, not sidelined.

Why people from Calabasas make the drive

Calabasas is not short on places to train, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What people drive to Woodland Hills for is the format. One 60 minute class covers cardio, strength, and functional work, coached from the first minute to the last, capped at 24 people, with your own station in every zone. If the studio near you does one of those three things well, this is the hour that does all three without three memberships.

The drive folds into a day you were already having. The 6:00 and 7:15 AM classes run before the eastbound 101 gets serious, the noon class pairs with a Warner Center or Topanga errand, and the 5:45 PM ends at 6:45, which is about when the westbound 101 starts to loosen up, so the workout is done before the drive home instead of hanging over it.

Questions from Calabasas

How far is Society 3 from Calabasas?

About 10 to 15 minutes, roughly 4 to 6 miles depending on whether you start near The Commons or out by Las Virgenes. Take the 101 east to the De Soto Ave exit and head south to Ventura Blvd, or follow Calabasas Road east until it becomes Ventura Blvd and keep going. The studio is at 21144 Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills, between De Soto Ave and Canoga Ave.

Is there parking, or will I be circling on Ventura?

The lot behind the building is free for members with no time limit, so you are not circling. The spots on Ventura Blvd itself are metered, and the side streets off Ventura are free but have posted limits. Turn in behind the building and walk in.

Which class times work with a commute from Calabasas?

The 6:00 and 7:15 AM classes put you on the 101 before it fills, and the 12:00 PM works if you are already headed to Warner Center or the boulevard. In the evening, the 5:45 PM ends at 6:45, so the drive home runs after the worst of the westbound traffic. Fridays add a 4:00 PM, and Saturdays run 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the start for check-in and setup, which from most of Calabasas means leaving about 25 to 30 minutes ahead.

Can I try one class before committing to the drive?

Yes. A single drop-in is $35, and first-timers can get two classes for $35, the price of one, good for 90 days. No membership is required to book, and nothing rebills. Sign the waiver online before you come so your first visit starts with a hello instead of paperwork.

Is it worth the drive from Calabasas when there are studios closer?

That depends on what you want from an hour. Society 3 runs one format: three zones, five minutes each, three rounds, with a coach on the floor and your own station in every zone. If you want cardio, strength, and functional work handled in a single coached class instead of three separate memberships, it is worth the fifteen minutes. If you want a specialist in one discipline, a closer studio may serve you better.

Is this a group fitness class or personal training?

A group fitness class, coached. Up to 24 people train the same hour together, each on their own machine or station, and one coach runs the room from the first minute to the last. You get the energy of a group and the eyes of a coach without booking one-on-one sessions. If you are comparing it to a gym near Calabasas, the difference is that nobody here is working out alone.
